Race 4 was a single Sunday race day for us. We normally practice on Saturday but other commitments required a late arrival Saturday night. Waking up Sunday morning in the trailer with 50 degree weather was interesting. I didn’t bring a jacket or long pants. It didn’t take long for the sun to warm Beaver Falls to a pleasant 75 degrees.
Morning practice started at 9 AM and we turned a 1:02:56. With no changes between sessions Grant dropped his time to 1:02:00 in the second practice. We felt good going into qualifying with a goal for the day to get into the 1:01:xx times.
Qualifying went well and Grant ran the second fastest time in the 6 lap qualification run with a time of 1:01:77. Breaking into the 1:01 time for the first time, he was now set to start in position 2 for the heat race. The heat race started with Grant in position two but he didn’t time the green very well and the third place kart made a train with the first place kart and Grant found himself in the third spot before the second turn of the first lap. From here Grant managed to keep up with two very fast drivers. When it was over, the kart that started in spot three won the heat race. Grant turned his fastest lap at Beaverun with a 1:01:32.
The feature race had Grant starting from the third spot. Having suffered a poor start in the heat race, Grant made up for it in the feature by gaining a spot before the second turn of the first lap. Soon after the third place kart was side lined from an incident with the fourth place driver. The race finished with Grant in second place after twelve laps. This is Grant’s first podium finish at Beaverun after moving up a class to the Yamaha Jr Can.
A helmet cam of the heat race is on our Video page.
